The presentation wi ll feature performances and clips of Julian'\;s interpretations of rarely \;heard pieces of t he period\, performed on bandura.\n \n  \;\n \ n \n Julian Kytasty is one of the world&rsquo\;s p remier players of the bandura (Ukrainian lute-harp )\, and the instrument&rsquo\;s leading North Amer ican exponent. A singer\, multi-instrumentalist an d third-generation bandurist\, he has concertized and taught instrumental and choral music throughou t the Americas and Europe. Born in Detroit\, he ha s a BFA in Theory and Composition from Concordia U niversity in Montreal.\n  \;\n Mr. Kytasty is especially recognized for his expertise in epic so ngs and early bandura repertoire. In 1989-1990 Kyt asty was one of the first North American-born band urists to tour Ukraine\, performing over one hundr ed concerts. \;\n  \;\n As a performer\, r ecording artist\, composer\, and band leader\, he has redefined the possibilities of the bandura. Mr . Kytasty is the Musical Director of New York Band ura and founder of Bandura Downtown\, an innovativ e music series based in New York&rsquo\;s East Vil lage that provides a home for creative exploration s of traditional and contemporary sounds and theme s. He has recorded and performed as a soloist\, wi th the Canadian world music group Paris to Kyiv. H e has also worked with musical innovators such as John Zorn and Derek Bailey\, as well as cross-cult urally with such artists as Wu Man\, Klezmer reviv alist Michael Alpert\, and Mongolian master musici an Battuvshin. These experiences have shaped his a pproach to composition as designing a musical spac e in which each individual voice and instrument ca n find room and inspiration to make its unique con tribution.\n  \;\n Julian Kytasty has also com posed music for theater\, puppet theater\, modern dance\, and film\, earning a Blizzard award for be st film score for a National Film Board of Canada documentary\, &ldquo\;My Mother'\;s Village.&rd quo\; His music is featured in the Ukrainian film The Guide\, Ukraine&rsquo\;s submission to the 201 5 Academy Awards. \;\n  \;\n Since 1998\, Julian Kytasty has worked with Yara Arts Group\, c reating music for productions including Raven\, Sc ythian Stones\, Winter Light\, Capt. John Smith Go es to Ukraine Underground Dreams and Hitting Bedro ck\, performing with the company in New York\, Ukr aine and Kyrgyzstan. \;His music for Yara'\ ;s "\;1917-2017: Tychyna\, Zhadan\, and the Do gs"\; won that year'\;s New York Innovative Theater Award for best original score.\n \n \n &n bsp\;\n \n This webinar is FREE\, but registration is required.
