Biographical / Historical

Ihumen Gregory (Fr. Gregory Woolfenden) was a Roman Catholic priest and scholar who converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. In addition to his religious ministry, he had a strong avocational interest in (among other things) church architecture.

He was born Graham Woolfenden and was educated in Liverpool, England, worked in London, then studied in Rome from 1970 to 1976. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1977, serving in the Liverpool Archdiocese. He graduated with an M.Phil from the University of Manchester, 1989, and a Ph.D. from Heythrop College, University of London in 1998. From 1989 through 2004, Ihumen Gregory lectured in Liturgy and Worship at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, and was a member of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Oxford. He converted to Orthodoxy in 1996 and took monastic tonsure in 2000. In 2004, he was received into the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and served the parishes of St. Nicholas in Monessen, PA, St. Mary's in Lorain, OH, and St. Mary's in New Britain, CT.
