Ukrainian Jewish Genealogy 101

Learn about genealogy resources available for Jewish genealogy in North America and how to leverage those resources to learn more about your family's history in Ukraine and the surrounding region.

This talk will be presented by Lara Diamond, who some of you may remember from her "Movement Between Towns in Eastern Europe" online Nashi Predky talk in November 2019.

We are truly happy to welcome Lara as a member of the Nashi Predky team! She will bring much-needed expertise not only in Ukrainian Jewish genealogy, but also in genealogical research in Zakarpattia/Transcarpathia -- one of the most historically complex and culturally/linguistically diverse areas of Ukraine.

This presentation will include online sources and documents not yet online to help trace your Jewish family in the US or Canada and then tracing them back to and within Ukraine. Even if you have no Jewish background (or think you have no Jewish background), the resources and approaches in this talk could still provide you with new ideas for your genealogy research.

Lara Diamond has been researching her family for over 25 years, since she was too young to have a driver's license and had to rely on her mother as a chauffeur. She has traced all branches of her family back to Europe and most multiple generations back in Europe using Russian Empire-era and Austria-Hungarian Empire records. Most of her research is in modern-day Ukraine, with a smattering of Belarus and Poland. She is president of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Maryland, leads JewishGen's Subcarpathian SIG, is on Ukraine SIG's board of directors, and runs several town-focused projects to collect documentation to assist all those researching ancestors from common towns. Lara enjoys speaking at a variety of local and national venues, sharing what is possible in Jewish genealogy. She blogs about her Eastern European research and DNA at larasgenealogy.blogspot.com.
