Archivist represents Center at Society of American Archivists meeting

August 18, 2014

In August 2014, the Center's archivist Dr. Michael Andrec joined nearly 2,500 archivists and information professionals at "ARCHIVES*RECORDS: Ensuring Access", the joint meeting of the Society of American Archivists, the Council of State Archivists, and the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators in Washington, DC.

He had the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, make new professional contacts, spread the word about the Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center, and learn of the latest advances and trends in the field.

A number of archival institutions in the DC area held open houses and tours. Michael had the opportunity to tour the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art and learn about their digitization efforts and approaches to integrating digitized archival items with collection-level descriptions, and the open house at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, where he made contact the Folklife Center's archivists.

The meeting included numerous conference and poster sessions, many of which were directly relevant to the work of the Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center. Particularly useful were presentations and discussions with other archivists dealing with multilingual collections, and a number of sessions on audio digitization and the complexity of copyright law regarding recorded sound (topics of particular importance here at the Center given the recent major donation of audio recordings by Yaroslawa Francuzenko).
