Fr. Joseph Zelechivsky scrapbooks

Fr. Joseph Zelechivsky was one of the first Ukrainian Orthodox priests in the United States. In addition to his religous ministry, Fr. Joseph was very active in Ukrainian cultural and arts activities, and he and his family were musicians, singers, and organizers of choirs and amateur theater productions. This collection consists of three scrapbooks assembled by Fr. Joseph Zelechivsky containing newspaper clippings, flyers, concert programs, and related ephemera related to activities at the parishes which he served, cultural events, and performances by ensembles with which he and his family was associated.

Biographical / Historical

Fr. Joseph Zelechivsky, in Ukrainian Йосиф Желехівський (Iosyf Zhelekhivs'kyi), also spelled Zelechiwsky, was one of the first Ukrainian Orthodox priests in the United States. He was born in the village of Borynia (today in Turka riaon, L'viv oblast', Ukraine) on January 6, 1890. He emigrated to the United States in October 1912. He was ordained to the priesthood in Chicago on April 28, 1919 by Bishop Stefan Dzubai. He served Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Kansas City, Kansas (1920-1924), Ukraina, North Dakota (1924-1927), Trenton, New Jersey (1927-1928), Millville, New Jersey (1928-1929), Boston, Massachusets (1929-1936), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1936-1941), Johnson City, NY (1941-1944), Providence and Manville, RI (1944-1962). In addition to his religous ministry, Fr. Joseph was very active in Ukrainian cultural and arts activities, and he and his family were musicians, singers, and organizers of choirs and amateur theater productions.

Scope and Contents

Contains newspaper clippings from Boston, Manchester NH, Pittsburgh, Binghamton NY, and national Ukrainian-language American newspapers. The articles relate to Ukrainian American community events, as well as protests (and counter-protests) related to the Holodomor and to the behavior of the Polish government in western Ukraine.

Processing Information

The cord that originally held the binding together (and which at the time of processing had torn through half of the album pages) was removed by the processing archivist.

Scrapbook, 1925-1950.

Scope and Contents

Contains flyers, programs, and other ephemera related to Ukrainian American community events (concerts, plays, protests, etc.) in North Dakota, Massachusets, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, as well as the program from Ukrainian Week at the Chicago World's Fair (1933). Also includes programs and flyers from non-Ukrainian events in which Zelechivsky family members or associated ensembles were participants.

Processing Information

Originally housed in a home-made album consisting of 14x22 inch sheets sewn in a single folio gathering (11x14 leaf size). Items were attached using plastic pressure-sensitive tape which had since dried out and no longer held the items. Items were removed by the processing archivist and rehoused in folders.
