UHEC Presents
In-person
Wednesday, June 17, 2026 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

For more than three decades, Roman Koval has been one of Ukraine's leading researchers of the Ukrainian liberation movement and a tireless advocate for preserving the memory of those who fought for Ukraine's independence. Through his books, documentaries, and leadership of the Historical Club Kholodnyi Yar, he has helped restore countless forgotten pages of Ukrainian history to public awareness.

A highlight of the evening will be Koval's presentation of the newly published English-language edition of Mykola Mikhnovsky's Independent Ukraine (1900), one of the first modern political works to openly advocate for a sovereign Ukrainian state. Written more than a century before Ukraine's current struggle captured the world's attention, Mikhnovsky's work laid important intellectual foundations for modern Ukrainian statehood.

The evening will also feature a screening of Koval's acclaimed short documentary, The
Eternal Beauty of Mykhailo Horlovyi, dedicated to the life and work of the distinguished
Ukrainian sculptor, artist, poet, and patriot Mykhailo Horlovyi. Through interviews with artists, writers, and cultural figures, the film explores Horlovy's artistic legacy and his lifelong commitment to expressing Ukraine's historical memory, cultural identity, and spiritual heritage through sculpture and poetry. The film will be presented with English subtitles.

Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion and question-and-answer session with Roman Koval on the importance of historical memory, the work of the Historical Club Kholodnyi Yar and the continuing relevance of Ukraine's struggle for independence.

Presentation and discussion in Ukrainian.

Guests are invited to remain following the program for light refreshments and fellowship.
