Crafts for Kids @ the UHEC

A sampling of childrens crafts, including painting, a wrapped doll, faux wood inlay crafts, pottery, and a Tree of Life with birds.

The Crafts for Kids programs of the UHEC are a fun, hands-on opportunity for kids to learn about Ukrainian art, culture and history based on objects found in the UHEC Museum collection. Participants will have a completed craft done by the end of the workshop, which they make while learning about its context and importance. This programming is suitable for grade school aged children. Virtual workshops are typically held monthly on a Sunday afternoon. Online programs are not recorded to protect the participant's privacy. Please visit our Events page to see currently-scheduled programs.

New boxes with new crafts and videos will be launched seasonally (December 1, March 1, June 1, September 1).

Passport Through Ukraine summer camp

Travel through Ukraine and learn about Ukrainian folk art, history and geography through daily educational art-based lessons. Participants will have a daily opportunity to make a craft inspired by different regions of Ukraine.

St. Nicholas Workshop

Each December, kids learn about St. Nicholas as they make traditional Ukrainian Christmas ornaments and take a photo with St. Nicholas.

Additional workshops

In addition to its regular children's programming, the UHEC also provides additional workshops. They may be purchasable for classrooms, youth groups, scouting troops, and other organizations. Please contact us at education@UkrHEC.org for pricing and availability.

Pysanky

Children learn about ancient symbols and legends while making a traditional Ukrainian pysanka (wax-resist decorated egg). Workshops include classic "kistka"-written technique, the Lemko "drop-pull" method, and even wax-resist egg decoration for younger children that doesn't involve hot wax or open flames!

Lialka Motanka

Learn the traditional Ukrainian method of making a doll using the wrap or reel method ("motanka" comes from "motaty", which means "to wrap"). While creating this symbol of wisdom and protectress of the family, students learn about traditional Ukrainian folk culture.

The Immigrant Experience

Through the use of primary source reproductions from the Museum, Archives, and Library collections of the UHEC, students will learn how to critically read and analyze primary source documents and photographs to understand the history of immigration of Ukrainians to the United States.
