Depicting Genocide: 20th Century Responses to the Holodomor

How should artists depict the horrors of a genocide? Should they be direct and graphic? Or should they be understated and give viewers just enough to let them create images of horror and loss in their own minds?

For more than a half-century, artistic memorializations of the Holodomor were remarkably rare. The UHEC is honored to have a number of these early works in its permanent collection. This exhibition explores the varied approaches that artists have used to tackle the topic of this genocidal artificial famine. In addition to images of the artworks, it also provides information on the Holodomor as a historical event and its impact on Ukrainian society, without which the artwork cannot be fully appreciated.

This exhibition was created for the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor and was on display at the UHEC from June 2023 to January 2024. The traveling exhibition banners have QR codes that link to a full-scale online version of the exhibition with additional information and context.

Contents

Six retractable banners and stands, housed in individual zippered carrying cases. Each banner is approximately 85 inches high x 33 inches wide. Onsite banner configuration can be determined by the host site. A linear layout is ideal, but other configurations that take advantage of the structure of the exhibition (one title panel, two panels of historical background, and three panels with artworks) are also possible. The UHEC can provide images and text for use in your publicity materials.
