Students visit Ukrainian Independence centennial exhibition

Students of the St. Andrew Ukrainian School in S. Bound Brook/Somerset visited the UHEC exhibition "Cultural Identity to Statehood: Ukraine 1917-1921", where they learned about how what is now a familiar symbol of the Ukrainian nation came to be "resurrected" in 1917, and how artists and musicians helped shape the newly independent nation.

2018 Pysanka Workshops

The UHEC's spring tradition of pysanka workshops for children and adults continued this March, with workshops for St. Andrew Ukrainian School and adults from the local community taught by UHEC educational programming director Oksana Pasakas and UHEC director Natalia Honcharenko.

Nashi Predky conference goes virtual

On St. Patrick's Day (ironically enough), the Nashi Predky Ukrainian Genealogy initiative hosted its first-ever online workshop, based on popular demand from many individuals who are not able to travel to New Jersey for our in-person conferences.

Scholar and activist Pavlo Podobev visits UHEC

In December, 2017, the UHEC was pleased to again welcome Pavlo Podobev from Ukraine. He gave a public talk about the fate of famous Ukrainians who fought in the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (УНР) for Ukraine's freedom in 1917-1920, among them Patriarch Mstyslav (Skrypnyk), and many others who are buried at St. Andrew Cemetery in South Bound Brook, NJ.

"Petrykivka Spring" exhibit opening

On March 19, 2017, the Center opened its latest exhibit in its Library Gallery, entitled "Petrykivka Spring" to an audience of nearly 70 visitors. It presents the artwork and the history of the Petrykivka folk art tradition, which in 2013 was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

"Ukrainian Statehood" conference at Columbia University

On February 24th and 25th, an international conference dedicated to the history of the period of Ukrainian statehood in 1917-1921 took place at the Columbia University. Although not one of the speakers, the Center's archivist Dr. Michael Andrec took part in the conference.

Freedom or Death

On February 4, 2017, the Center in conjunction with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA presented a screening of the film "Freedom or Death" by Damian Kolodiy together with a solemn commemoration of the anniversary of the Euromaidan Protests and the "Heavenly Hundred" who perished in the protests.

Saint Nicholas visits the Historical and Educational Center

On Sunday afternoon, December 18th, 2016, Saint Nicholas visited the children and families gathered at the Heinrich Fisher Home. The visit was organized and sponsored by the Ukrainian History and Education Center. Center staff and volunteers decorated the historic Heinrich Fisher house in festive Christmas decor, offered complimentary refreshments of coffee, hot chocolate, bagels, and cookies, and conducted an educational workshop.
